What is Alopecia?

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata starts with bald spots on the head. These spots arise due to inflammations of the hair roots. The big bald spots can expand to the rest of the body, often also affecting the eyelashes and eyebrows. Both men and women can get this type of Alopecia.

There are 3 gradations of Alopexia Areata:

Alopecia Areate: local baldness
Alopecia Totalis: Mostly baldness on the scalp
Alopecia Universalis: no hair growth at all

Alopecia Androgenetica

Another word for this type of baldness is ‘male baldness’. Yet it is also possible for women to get Alopecia Androgenetica. This type of Alopecia is a common type of permanent hair loss. Unfortunately this is a irreversible process.

Alopecia Cicatricialis

Alopecia Cicatricialis is a type of baldness caused by scar-tissue which doesn’t allow hair to grow on.

Alopecia Diffusa

Alopecia Diffusa causes sudden hair loss on the entire scalp. This is mostly temporary and the hair will grow back again.

Pseudopelae of Broncq

This is a special type of Alopecia Cicatricialis.

Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder where people have a very strong urge to pull out their own hair. Often the eyelashes and eyebrows are affected as well as the hair on the head.
